Boundaries: Transcended

Journeys Home

Boundaries: Transcended celebrates the work of hundreds of people who came together to build tiny ceramic homes celebrating the resettlement of refugees in the Hunter Valley.

People built traditional huts from Ghana, apartments from India, and humpies from Australia – to name just a few. Others built tents or caravans, reminding us that all kinds of structures can be a home. Some people build future focused buildings – the architecturally designed home they hoped for when they finished their degree or Australia’s Parliament House – representing the final step on their migration journey: citizenship. For others, home was not necessarily a house. Temples from Cambodia, Japan, and India sit alongside mosques from Mecca and churches from Vietnam.

The 700 tiny houses embody individual’s journeys, the journey of their ancestors, and the process of building a community. Clay is part of our shared cultural heritage; it unites diverse people in unexpected ways and connects us in ways we may not always know we share. Pottery helps us understand how people, ideas, and things move across the globe.

This exhibition encourages you to think about the connections we create as we journey through life and build a community together.
